KANO, Nigeria – Fire engulfs the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market in Kano early Friday, marking the third major market inferno in the state this month and compounding traders’ losses.
The blaze breaks out in Dakata Quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area, razing shops mainly operated by small-scale oil producers and plastic recyclers.
Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirms firefighters are battling to contain the inferno.
“As I speak, our personnel are still working to put out the fire. The cause and extent of damage are yet to be determined,” Abdullahi says.
The incident follows two devastating fires at Singer Market in February, which destroy goods worth billions of naira. Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf previously donated ₦100 million to affected traders, while the Federal Government and the Progressive Governors Forum pledged ₦8 billion in support.
Residents are now calling for urgent safety audits across markets to prevent recurring disasters.
