KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Government suspends three hospital personnel following the death of Aishatu Umar at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, signalling renewed efforts to enforce accountability and patient safety in public healthcare facilities.
The suspension comes after a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding Umar’s death. Authorities emphasise strict adherence to professional and ethical standards in state-run hospitals.
Confirming the development, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, says in a statement obtained by Africa Health Report on Wednesday that the incident occurred at the facility and warrants immediate administrative action.
“In line with our commitment to accountability, professionalism and patient safety, three personnel directly involved in the case have been suspended from clinical activities with immediate effect,” Suleiman says.
The matter has been formally referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for a full investigation and appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with laws and professional guidelines. Health observers note that such actions are critical for strengthening oversight and restoring public confidence in healthcare services.
Umar reportedly died following suspected medical negligence after a surgical procedure in September 2025. Her family alleges she experienced severe and persistent abdominal pain for months prior to her death at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
“She began to complain of severe abdominal pain which persisted for about four months,” said a family member, Mohammed.
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board reiterates its commitment to transparency, internal monitoring, and professional standards to prevent recurrence. Officials extend condolences to the deceased’s family and reaffirm that negligence will not be tolerated in any state-owned healthcare facility.
