KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has released ₦5 billion as the fifth tranche of gratuities and death benefits to retired civil servants and families of deceased workers, raising total payments to ₦27 billion.
Supervising the ceremony on Wednesday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to clear the ₦48 billion backlog inherited from previous governments.
“This is part of our unwavering resolve to restore dignity to our retirees and ensure justice for those who dedicated their lives to public service,” Yusuf said.
Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the announcement in a statement, stressing that the phased disbursement would continue until the liabilities are fully cleared.
Labour unions and pensioners at the event hailed the move as timely and lifesaving. Many retirees expressed relief, noting that the payments have helped ease longstanding financial burdens after years of waiting.
Governor Yusuf reiterated his commitment: “We will not rest until every deserving worker, or their family receives what is rightfully theirs.”
Stakeholders believe the intervention will boost confidence in government and improve the welfare of vulnerable groups dependent on pensions. Analysts say clearing half the liability within a year demonstrates fiscal responsibility and prioritisation of social justice in Kano State.
The administration insists that the initiative is not only about settling debts but about rebuilding trust between government and citizens.
