KANO, Nigeria – Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has strongly condemned the withdrawal of police personnel from Kano’s 65th Independence Day celebration at the Sani Abacha Stadium, describing the action as “unpatriotic and unacceptable.”
Speaking during the ceremony on Wednesday, Yusuf criticised the Commissioner of Police for pulling out security operatives from the event. “The withdrawal of security personnel at such a symbolic national occasion is uncalled for. It undermines the unity our Independence Day represents,” he said.
The governor assured citizens of his administration’s commitment to public safety despite what he called deliberate attempts to disrupt peace. “We will not be distracted. The security of every Kano resident remains our top priority,” he declared.
Relations between the Kano State Government and the Police Command have been tense since the NNPP-led administration took office in 2023, largely due to the ongoing emirate dispute. Analysts say the latest standoff risks deepening mistrust between both institutions.
Civil society groups have urged federal authorities to intervene and restore cooperation between the police and the state government.
The Police Command has yet to issue a formal response to the governor’s remarks.
