KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has disbursed ₦800.7 million to 5,384 young entrepreneurs in the first phase of a new empowerment programme.
At the launch Tuesday in Kano, each beneficiary received ₦150,000 to start or expand their business. The governor said the initiative reflects his administration’s resolve to support youth-led enterprises and combat unemployment.
“This programme is designed to equip our youths to contribute meaningfully to the economy and secure a brighter future,” Yusuf declared.
He urged recipients to use the funds wisely, warning against misuse. He also assured those yet to benefit that another tranche would be released soon.
Spokesman Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa said the initiative targets sustainability and inclusion. “We want to empower not just today’s youth, but generations to come.”
Civil society groups in Kano praised the move but urged the state to monitor utilisation closely. “Handouts must translate into real businesses, not wasted opportunities,” activist Hauwa Usman noted.
Governor Yusuf pledged to continue prioritising policies that open opportunities for young people. “Our focus is prosperity through empowerment,” he said.
