KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government intensifies disease surveillance and emergency response in Gamji Village, Garko Local Government Area, following reports of suspected diphtheria cases that spark fears of a possible outbreak.
The intervention is carried out on Saturday by the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) after media reports allege deaths linked to symptoms associated with diphtheria and cerebrospinal meningitis.
In a statement issued on Sunday, KNCDC Director-General Prof. Muhammad Adamu Abbas says the operation is aimed at verifying the claims and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
“The exercise is conducted to assess the health situation and ensure prompt case management,” Abbas says.
According to the agency, a multidisciplinary team of medical and public health experts is deployed to Gamji Village for on-the-spot investigation. The team is divided into four groups to carry out house-to-house visits, ensuring full community coverage.
Residents showing symptoms are clinically assessed, while samples are collected for laboratory analysis to confirm or rule out diphtheria and other infectious diseases. Free medications are also provided as part of immediate response measures.
The KNCDC says the exercise focuses on reducing health risks, improving patient outcomes and preventing further transmission.
Health officials also conduct sensitisation campaigns in homes and mosques, educating residents on early symptom reporting, personal hygiene and the importance of seeking medical care promptly.
“Community cooperation is critical during public health emergencies,” the statement notes.
Prof. Abbas reassures residents that the state government remains committed to safeguarding public health and will continue monitoring the situation pending laboratory results.
The agency recalls similar interventions in Bebeji Local Government Area following earlier reports of suspected diphtheria cases.
