KANO, Nigeria – Security agencies in Kano State impose strict movement restrictions ahead of Saturday’s by-elections in Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies, as authorities step up efforts to guarantee peaceful polls.
The Kano State Police Command on Thursday announces that movement of vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles will be restricted from midnight until 6 p.m. on election day, with exemptions granted only to essential services.
The measures follow a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, chaired by the Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ambassador Zango Abdu.
In a statement, Police Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori says security agencies are fully prepared to ensure credible, transparent and violence-free elections.
“To maintain law and order, only voters and INEC-accredited officials will be allowed access to polling units,” the statement says.
Police ban the carrying of weapons, political party insignia and loitering around polling centres. Vigilante groups, neighbourhood watches, Hisbah and traffic officials are also barred from election duties at polling units.
“Security agencies will remain impartial, professional and neutral throughout the process,” the police assure.
Residents of the affected constituencies are urged to cooperate with security personnel and report suspicious activities through designated emergency channels.
