KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State House of Assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, accusing him of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.
The motion, introduced during Thursday’s plenary session by Majority Leader Lawal Hussaini Dala, receives backing from 38 of the Assembly’s 40 lawmakers, signalling strong legislative support for the move.
Speaker Ismail Falgore presides over the session and directs that a formal notice be served on the deputy governor in accordance with Section 188 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
Lawmakers accuse Gwarzo of collecting monthly kickbacks while serving as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024.
According to the notice, he allegedly receives ₦1.5 million monthly from each of the state’s 44 local government councils, amounting to ₦462 million over seven months.
The Assembly further claims that between February and July 2024, he collects an additional ₦3.255 million monthly from each council, totalling ₦726 million.
Lawmakers also accuse the deputy governor of facilitating the release of ₦10 million from each council—totalling ₦440 million—to NovoMed Pharmaceuticals Limited, allegedly violating procurement and fiscal regulations.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Assembly, Kamaludde Shawai Sani, confirms the development.
“Thirty-eight members have backed the motion. The deputy governor now has two weeks to respond or face full impeachment proceedings,” Sani says.
The political crisis unfolds weeks after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defects from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering resignations from several commissioners loyal to the NNPP.
Gwarzo, however, remains aligned with his original political bloc.
An aide close to the deputy governor says:
“He remains committed to his principles and will act in the best interest of the state.”
The Assembly says constitutional procedures will determine the next stage of the impeachment process.
