Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf
KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government has approved the construction of 50 new low-cost housing estates across 36 Local Government Areas, in what officials describe as one of the state’s largest affordable housing expansions in recent years.
The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who said the initiative aims to close the state’s widening housing deficit and improve access to safe and affordable accommodation for low- and middle-income households.
According to the statement, each housing estate will include access roads, electricity, and water infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability and habitability.
“This initiative reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to equitable development and his vision to ensure every part of the state benefits from sustainable infrastructure,” the statement read.
Communities in several LGAs have long complained of rising rent costs, overcrowded settlements, and deteriorating housing conditions. The new estates are expected to expand home-ownership opportunities and reduce informal settlement pressures.
The government said it will continue prioritising investments that improve living standards, strengthen local economic participation, and promote inclusive growth across Kano State.
