KADUNA, Nigeria – Academic staff of Kaduna State University have commended Governor Uba Sani for implementing welfare measures they say have improved working conditions, strengthened industrial relations and restored confidence between the university and the state government.
The assessment was made on Friday during a press briefing by union representatives, Comrades Abubakar Abdullahi and Silas Amos Bakut, who outlined the administration’s response to longstanding staff welfare concerns. The union leaders said the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alongside earlier welfare interventions, had improved staff morale and created a more supportive working environment.
They also said salaries continued to be paid during the recent industrial action and that engagement between the university management, government and union remained respectful. “At no point during the strike action were the union or its members subjected to intimidation, threats or any form of harassment,” the representatives said.
They listed several payments and interventions, including the payment of 60 per cent of withheld salaries, outstanding Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances covering 2016 to 2020, and five months’ salaries for the period from May to September 2022. The union representatives also said the government had paid an advance of ₦300m towards outstanding Earned Academic Allowance arrears for the same earlier period.
They noted, however, that discussions were continuing over death benefits and promotion arrears dating back to 2021. Other welfare measures include the allocation of about 10.2 hectares of land for a multipurpose cooperative housing estate and a ₦4m subsidy for each beneficiary to reduce the cost of home ownership for eligible lecturers.
