KADUNA, Nigeria – Gunmen attack two churches in Kaduna State during Easter celebrations, killing at least seven worshippers and abducting several others, triggering panic in the affected community.
The assault occurred early Sunday in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area, as Christians gathered for worship.
Local councillor Mark Bawa confirms the incident, saying casualty figures remain uncertain.
“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties… I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” he says.
The affected churches are identified as First ECWA Church and St Augustine Catholic Church.
Residents say the attackers storm the area in large numbers, surround the worship centres and open fire before taking victims into the bush.
Eyewitnesses report that the gunmen operate for an extended period without resistance, highlighting security gaps in rural communities.
Poor telecommunications networks are also cited as a factor delaying emergency response.
The attack follows a similar incident in nearby Kurmin Wali, raising fresh concerns over recurring violence in southern Kaduna.
Police say further details will be communicated as investigations continue.
The latest assault heightens fears over safety during religious gatherings and renews calls for stronger security presence across vulnerable regions.
