ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postpones its nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general election, prioritising immediate electoral preparations.
The decision follows a consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, according to committee chairman Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
“Following deliberations, the Commission resolved to postpone the exercise,” Haruna says.
INEC on Friday explained that the revalidation process is designed to update and sanitise the voter register, correcting irregularities and strengthening electoral credibility.
However, shifting the timeline allows the commission to focus on operational readiness ahead of the 2027 polls.
Haruna assures that eligible voters will still have the opportunity to review and update their details when the exercise is eventually conducted.
The commission reiterates its commitment to transparent, inclusive and efficient elections.
The move signals a strategic recalibration of INEC’s priorities as preparations intensify for the next general election.
