LAGOS, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun a statewide display of the voter register in Lagos, giving residents a limited window to verify details, submit claims and challenge irregular entries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, which commenced on April 29 and runs until May 5, spans all 20 local government areas and aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, officials said.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Ayobami Salami described the process as critical to safeguarding electoral credibility, urging citizens to confirm their registration details and report anomalies, including duplicate entries, underage registrations and deceased voters still listed.
“The credibility of the 2027 elections depends significantly on the accuracy of the voter register,” Salami said, warning against a system “burdened with irregular or invalid entries.”
The register was compiled through the Continuous Voter Registration process, and INEC says public scrutiny is essential to cleaning the database before the polls.
Civil society organisations and political actors have also been called upon to monitor the process and ensure compliance with laid-down guidelines.
INEC has already fixed January 16, 2027, for presidential and National Assembly elections, with governorship and state assembly polls scheduled for February 6, 2027.
The verification exercise is widely seen as a decisive step in restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system, amid longstanding concerns over voter register integrity.
