BIRNIN KEBBI, Nigeria – At least eight people are killed after gunmen carry out coordinated attacks on Kaiwa, Gelawu and Gebbe villages in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, police confirm.
The attacks, which occur without warning, trigger panic across the communities, forcing many residents to flee to neighbouring villages and surrounding bushes for safety.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, Bashir Usman, says seven people die during the attacks, while another victim later succumbs to injuries while receiving medical treatment. “One injured person is currently responding to treatment,” Usman says.
He adds that security agencies have launched coordinated operations across the affected areas to prevent further violence. “Security agencies have sustained coordinated operations within the affected areas, while intensified patrols and surveillance are ongoing to forestall further breaches,” Usman says, noting that details of the operation cannot yet be disclosed.
Residents describe the attacks as devastating, saying the affected communities have not experienced such violence in many years. “The entire area is in shock. People are afraid to return home,” a resident tells reporters.
Security operatives are deployed to the villages shortly after the attacks to restore calm and reassure residents. Community members appeal to the Kebbi State Government to strengthen security presence and improve early-warning measures to prevent future attacks.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
