Lagos, Nigeria – A speeding truck carrying granite overturns on the Lekki–Ajah Expressway on Thursday morning, killing a male motorist instantly and leaving his wife critically injured, Lagos traffic officials say.
The fatal crash occurs at Eleko Junction when the articulated truck, reportedly travelling from the Epe axis, suffers brake failure and rams into a Toyota saloon car heading towards Epe. The impact flips the truck, crushing the smaller vehicle and trapping its occupants.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq says emergency responders arrive swiftly but are unable to save the male driver.
“The victim is confirmed dead at the scene, while his wife sustains severe injuries and is rushed to hospital,” Taofiq states.
Officials from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps and passers-by work together to extract the victims from the wreckage. The truck driver flees immediately after the collision, prompting a manhunt by officers of the Akodo Police Division.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki describes the crash as “entirely avoidable”, warning that mechanical negligence and speeding continue to claim lives on Lagos roads.
“Heavy-duty vehicle operators must maintain their trucks and drive responsibly. Lives depend on it,” he says.
The incident again highlights growing safety concerns on the Lekki corridor, a major route increasingly burdened by commercial trucks and construction traffic. Authorities urge stricter enforcement and routine vehicle inspections to curb preventable fatalities.
