GOMBE, Nigeria – The Gombe State Police Command has warned residents and commuters near the Gombe Military Shooting Range in Liji not to panic over gunshots as officers conduct a two-day routine shooting exercise.
The Gombe shooting exercise is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13, 2026, between 7am and 4pm each day, according to a public announcement issued by the command on Tuesday.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, says the exercise is part of routine training activities for police personnel.
“The Gombe State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a routine range exercise will be conducted by its personnel from Wednesday, 12th August to Thursday, 13th August 2026, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily, at the Gombe Military Shooting Range, Liji,” Abdullahi says.
The command advises residents, commuters and other members of the public in the vicinity to avoid unnecessary movement around the designated area while the exercise is underway.
It also warns members of the public against trespassing into the shooting range for their own safety.
“Members of the public are advised not to panic at the sound of gunshots during the stated period and to avoid unnecessary movement or trespassing around the designated range area for safety reasons,” Abdullahi says.
Parents and guardians are also urged to warn children and other young people against going near the shooting range during the exercise.
The police ask residents to comply with instructions issued by security personnel deployed around the area.
The command says the exercise is part of its efforts to maintain operational readiness and improve security across the state.
It assures residents that their cooperation and understanding are appreciated.
The shooting exercise is expected to conclude at 4pm on Thursday, August 13.
