GOMBE, Nigeria – A Gombe Assembly canopy collapse has left one construction worker dead and seven others injured after a section of the entrance canopy under construction at the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex gave way, prompting the state government to order an immediate investigation.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the construction site of the new legislative complex, according to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Gombe State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu.
Adamu said eight workers were affected by the collapse, with one confirmed dead and seven others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
The injured workers were evacuated to hospital, where five are receiving treatment at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two others are being treated at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
The Gombe State Government expressed condolences over the fatality and said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has been briefed on the incident.
According to the statement, the governor directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at the state’s expense while relevant authorities begin safety and accountability procedures.
The government has mandated the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, alongside emergency response, regulatory and technical agencies, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine its cause.
The contractor handling the project and the supervising consultant have also been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours, which will form part of a preliminary investigation and comprehensive technical assessment.
“While the investigation is ongoing, the government will allow the established facts to guide all necessary decisions and actions. Appropriate measures will be taken in line with the outcome of the investigation and applicable standards,” the statement said.
