PLATEAU, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps issues a stern warning to motorists in Plateau State to avoid drunk driving, speeding, and other risky behaviour during Valentine’s Day celebrations, as traffic volumes increase across major routes.
The Plateau State Sector Commander, Adelaja Ogungbemi, delivers the warning in a statement released on Saturday and signed by the command’s Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan. He says the directive aligns with nationwide instructions to ensure maximum road safety and prevent avoidable loss of life during the festivities.
“We will not tolerate drunk driving, speeding, and reckless driving. Enforcement of these and other excesses will be sanctioned,” Ogungbemi says.
The sector commander stresses that heightened enforcement will accompany intensified public education, as operatives monitor highways, urban roads, and known celebration hotspots across the state.
Ogungbemi notes that the warning follows a directive by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mandating all state commands to prioritise safety and reduce road traffic crashes during festive periods.
“The Corps Marshal has directed state commanders and operatives to ensure maximum safety on the roads,” Ogungbemi adds.
He urges motorists to plan journeys properly, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, obey speed limits, and remain patient in traffic, warning that celebrations should not come at the cost of human lives.
The FRSC also calls on passengers and other road users to play an active role in safety by discouraging reckless driving and reporting dangerous behaviour.
“The Plateau Sector Command urges all road users to prioritise safety and avoid actions that could endanger themselves and others,” the statement says.
Members of the public are advised to report emergencies, crashes, or dangerous driving through FRSC emergency contact numbers, as patrol teams remain on standby throughout the Valentine’s Day period.
