OGUN, Nigeria – A fresh gas leak in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, affected more than 100 students and teachers on Friday, triggering panic across several schools less than two months after a similar environmental incident in the area.
The Friday incident impacted schools including Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende, and Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School near Epe Garage, forcing emergency evacuations.
Affected students receive treatment at Ogun State Hospital, Ijebu Ode, and several private medical facilities across the town.
Videos circulating on social media show frightened students running from school premises while teachers assist unconscious victims into waiting vehicles for urgent medical attention.
An eyewitness describes the situation as worse than the previous gas leak recorded in April.
“The whole hospital is crowded. Some parents have already moved their children to private hospitals for treatment,” the witness says.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirms the incident and says emergency agencies have been deployed to affected areas.
“I am aware of the situation, and necessary action is being taken,” Oresanya says.
In a statement, the Ogun State Government reveals that air quality monitoring devices detect elevated methane concentrations of about 13,500 ppm in parts of Ijebu Ode.
Although officials say the methane level remains below the lower explosive limit, authorities warn that the development poses environmental and public health concerns requiring urgent investigation.
The government says a multi-agency team comprising environmental experts, emergency responders and public health officials will investigate the source of the emissions and assess exposure risks.
Residents are advised to avoid open flames in areas with unusual gas odours and report symptoms including dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties to nearby hospitals.
