KANO, Nigeria – Kano State and the French Government have pledged stronger collaboration under Nigeria’s National Water Sector Reform Programme as both sides push for improved institutional capacity, sustainable water management and social impact across the state.
French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, led an eight-member delegation on Wednesday to Government House, Kano, where officials reviewed ongoing projects and explored new avenues of cooperation.
A statement signed by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, says the ambassador emphasised that his team’s size and expertise reflect France’s deep interest in northern Nigeria’s development.
Fonbaustier says France’s commitment is based on “shared priorities and a common destiny,” noting that the reform programme focuses on strengthening institutions and ensuring long-term sustainability rather than hardware alone. “Our cooperation with Kano is solid, and today’s discussions opened new opportunities for expanded partnership,” he says.
He highlights transport and urban mobility as emerging areas for collaboration given Kano’s rapid population growth.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf welcomes the delegation and expresses gratitude for France’s long-standing support. He says his administration is determined to deliver reliable, safe and socially responsive water services.
“We are committed to ensuring that our water systems serve communities effectively and sustainably,” the governor says.
