LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Lagos State Chapter, has marked its 40th anniversary with renewed commitments to tackling climate-related health challenges, expanding community healthcare services and strengthening humanitarian interventions across the state.
The week-long celebration, which commenced on June 1, is themed: “Tackling Global Socio-Economic and Humanitarian Challenges Arising from Economic Instability, Health Hazards Caused by Climate Change.”
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Amirah on Thursday, the Naibah-Amirah, Alhaja Amudat Mojirade Olanipekun, said the theme reflects the growing realities confronting communities, particularly vulnerable populations affected by climate-related health risks and economic hardship.
“FOMWAN will continue to emphasise advocacy through community development and humanitarian services. This week allows us to assess our progress and chart a course for the future,” she said.
Olanipekun disclosed that the organisation’s Primary Healthcare Project in Elesan Village, Eti-Osa, was nearing completion, with FOMWAN seeking ₦350 million to complete the facility.
She added that the association had donated bedding and toiletries to general hospitals in Ikeja and Lagos Island, while extending support to correctional centres through food donations.
According to her, FOMWAN has installed 26 boreholes in underserved communities to improve access to safe water and reduce health risks linked to poor sanitation.
The association also partners with the NDLEA on rehabilitation referrals and supports initiatives addressing HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence and illiteracy.
National Chairperson of Humanitarian Services and Community Development, Alhaja Khairat Sodique, urged members nationwide to showcase the organisation’s impact in healthcare, skills development and humanitarian service over the past four decades.
She said the anniversary celebrations would culminate in a symposium and grand finale aimed at highlighting FOMWAN’s contributions to national development.
