KANO, Nigeria – Fire engulfs sections of Abbatuwa Cemetery in Kano’s Fagge Local Government Area, destroying parts of the burial ground before firefighters contain the blaze.
The Kano State Fire Service receives a distress call at about 2:02 p.m. on Wednesday and dispatches firefighters from its headquarters to the scene.
Officials say dry grasses within the cemetery accelerate the spread of the fire, allowing flames to consume multiple sections before emergency crews bring the situation under control.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the service’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, says firefighters prevent the blaze from spreading further.
“Although we successfully contained the fire, several areas of the cemetery were badly affected,” Abdullahi states.
No injuries or fatalities are recorded, according to the fire service.
Preliminary investigations suggest that human activity likely triggers the fire, raising concerns about public safety practices in areas with dry vegetation.
Abdullahi warns residents against smoking or using open flames within cemeteries and similar environments.
“These areas are highly flammable. Any careless action can lead to destructive consequences,” he says.
The Kano State Fire Service reiterates its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging residents to promptly report emergencies to enable swift intervention.
