LAGOS, Nigeria – The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to health workers and warehouse managers against diverting or mismanaging medical commodities intended for Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria.
The directive, contained in a statement on Sunday by Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Muyi Aina, coincided with the nationwide distribution of essential supplies under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“These commodities must serve the interest of the Nigerian people. We will conduct periodic evaluations of their distribution and utilisation to ensure transparency,” said Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.
The programme covers 774 PHCs nationwide—one in each Local Government Area—and includes $3 million worth of equipment for 200 newly renovated PHCs, alongside $12 million in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) commodities such as family planning supplies.
“This renewed investment signals our commitment to reform, transparency, and accountability. Nigerians deserve reliable, accessible, quality healthcare starting from the grassroots,” Prof. Pate stressed.
The minister urged Nigerians to protect PHCs, support frontline health workers, and hold institutions accountable, insisting that better health outcomes are inseparable from transparency.
The government says the initiative underscores its resolve to ensure public resources directly benefit citizens, particularly vulnerable groups relying on PHCs for essential services.
