Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has secured ₦700 billion to fund the installation of two million electricity meters annually under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at the opening session of the 2025 Nigerian Energy Forum in Lagos, Adelabu said the funding was sourced through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to close Nigeria’s metering gap, improve billing transparency and stabilise the financial performance of electricity distribution companies.
He stated that the PMI complements the 3.2 million meters already being procured through the World Bank-supported Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), placing the country on track to eliminate the metering deficit within five years.
“This intervention is designed to restore trust in billing, strengthen sector liquidity, and reduce losses,” Adelabu said.
The minister added that more than $2 billion has been mobilised over the past two years through strategic programmes such as the World Bank DARES, NSIA’s RIPLE, and the JICA renewable power facility, aimed at expanding electricity access to underserved communities, schools and healthcare centres.
“With sustained investment, innovation, and strong partnerships, Nigeria is firmly on the path to a more reliable and resilient energy future,” he said.
