FG, Resident Doctors Reach Agreement on Salary Ahead of Planned Nationwide Strike

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has reached key agreements with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to address outstanding salary arrears, promotion arrears and other welfare concerns, in a move aimed at averting the nationwide indefinite strike scheduled to commence on August 10.

The breakthrough followed a high-level meeting convened by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, with representatives of the Federal Ministries of Health, Labour and Employment, Finance, the Budget Office of the Federation, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The meeting came after NARD threatened industrial action over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid salary arrears, delayed promotion benefits and other outstanding entitlements.

Speaking after the meeting, NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, said discussions with the Federal Government had produced a clear roadmap for resolving the association’s concerns.

According to him, agreements were reached on the payment of outstanding salary and promotion arrears, while the relevant government agencies have been directed to begin implementation within one week.

Suleiman added that the meeting also established timelines for resolving other outstanding issues affecting resident doctors.

The development is expected to ease tensions between the Federal Government and resident doctors and could avert the planned nationwide strike if the agreed timelines are implemented.

The Federal Government has continued to engage health sector unions as part of efforts to maintain industrial harmony and prevent disruptions to healthcare services across the country.
