ZARIA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has pledged stricter monitoring of funds released under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) through the implementation of the revised BHCPF 2.0 Guidelines.
The Secretary of the Ministerial Oversight Committee, Dr Oreshoremi Ogbe, disclosed this during the onboarding of State Oversight Committees from the North-West Zone in Zaria, Kaduna State.
He expressed concern that the 2023 audit revealed persistent accountability gaps in fund management. “The Federal Government will follow due process to ensure funds benefit the most vulnerable citizens,” he said.
He explained that BHCPF 2.0 places transparency and oversight at the centre of healthcare financing at both federal and sub-national levels.
National Coordinator of the Sector-Wide Approach Coordination Office, Dr Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, said the renewed commitment would improve healthcare governance and service delivery.
He noted that the reforms aimed to ensure funds reach primary health centres where they are most needed.
Acting Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Katsina State, Mallam Rabo Tambaya, said local governments would work closely with oversight committees to ensure smooth implementation.
The BHCPF provides financing for primary healthcare facilities nationwide, particularly those serving rural and low-income populations.
