JIGAWA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has directed hospitals across Nigeria to strengthen isolation facilities, stock protective equipment and prepare for the early detection and management of suspected Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases.
Deputy Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, Dr Yunus Mohammed Eze, disclosed this on Friday, saying the directive was issued through the Federal Ministry of Health to reinforce the country’s preparedness against a possible outbreak
Eze said FMC Birnin Kudu had responded by upgrading its isolation unit, placing healthcare workers on alert and making arrangements to refer suspected cases to designated treatment centres. “The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, communicated with health facilities across the country and directed them to prepare their isolation units and ensure that everything required to protect healthcare workers and manage affected patients was available,” he said.
He added that the hospital management had strengthened its isolation capacity and was prepared to separate suspected cases and arrange referrals where necessary.
Eze said the facility had also intensified public awareness through its Infectious Diseases and Community Medicine units to educate residents on infection prevention and encourage early reporting of suspected cases.
