Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on Thursday.
According to the minister, the observance of June 12 remains a significant symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and honours the sacrifices made by citizens who fought for democratic governance and civil liberties.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency, accountability and the rule of law, while ensuring inclusive governance.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining national security as a foundation for democratic stability and sustainable development.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on their civic responsibilities and recommit themselves to national unity, peaceful coexistence and lawful conduct.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold democratic values and contribute to building a stronger nation,” the statement said.
June 12 is celebrated annually in remembrance of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election. The poll was won by the late businessman and politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but was annulled by the military government, sparking years of pro-democracy activism.
The date replaced May 29 as Democracy Day in 2018 following a decision by former President Muhammadu Buhari to honour the significance of the June 12 struggle.
