KANO, Nigeria – The Federal Government declares December 25, December 26 and January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations across Nigeria.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announces the holidays in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Monday in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo extends goodwill messages to Christians and Nigerians nationwide, urging reflection on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice symbolised by Christmas.
“The festive season offers an opportunity to strengthen national unity, tolerance and harmony,” the minister says, calling on citizens to renew their commitment to nation-building.
He also urges Nigerians to pray for peace, security and continued progress, while remaining law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations. Tunji-Ojo encourages cooperation with security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive season, wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
