YOBE, Nigeria – The Federal Government begins the vaccination of 2,500 cattle against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) in Yobe State, intensifying efforts to contain one of Nigeria’s most destructive livestock diseases.
The exercise, inaugurated in Damaturu by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services at the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Mr Mitchell Alao, on Thursday targets improved cattle health, pastoral livelihoods and national food security.
“CBPP has for decades undermined sustainable livestock development, causing reduced productivity, high mortality and severe economic losses,” Alao says. He explains that the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda to strengthen animal health systems and veterinary surveillance nationwide.
According to Alao, the vaccination drive enhances preventive veterinary services while laying the groundwork for a resilient and commercially viable livestock sector. He urges field veterinarians to strictly adhere to vaccination protocols, ensure accurate documentation and maintain continuous engagement with cattle-owning communities.
The programme, facilitated by Astute Synergy Limited, receives support from Yobe State veterinary services, livestock associations, development partners and technical teams.
Thedescribes the intervention as critical to boosting animal production, noting that the state hosts over 10 million cattle. He appeals for additional vaccines to cover more herds.
Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Damaturu, Mohammed Ngordi, commends both federal and state governments for sustained support to pastoralists.
