KANO, Nigeria – The Federal Government approves a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, marking a major investment aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving urban mobility and stimulating economic growth across the state capital.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, discloses the approval while addressing members of the state contingent at the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The proposed rail system is designed as a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit network linking major districts within the Kano metropolis, offering residents a reliable alternative to road transport.
“The Kano Metropolitan Rail Service will transform public transportation by providing a safe, reliable and affordable means of movement for residents across the metropolis,” Governor Yusuf says.
He explains that the project is expected to enhance mobility, boost trade and investment, and significantly improve the quality of life for Kano residents.
Yusuf adds that his administration’s decision to work closely with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) is driven by the need to attract large-scale infrastructure capable of accelerating development.
“Our alignment with the Federal Government is guided by the interest of Kano people and the urgent need to deliver critical infrastructure that drives economic growth,” he says.
Describing the rail service as a landmark intervention, the governor says it will reposition Kano as a key transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.
He assures residents that the state government will collaborate with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent execution and timely delivery of the project, while expressing appreciation to the Federal Government for the approval.
