ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) approves the 2026 budget proposal, clearing the way for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to present the appropriation bill to the National Assembly.
The approval follows an emergency cabinet meeting held at the State House in Abuja on Friday, convened to grant formal authorisation before transmission to lawmakers.
Confirming the development, the President’s Special Assistant on social media, Dada Olusegun, says the council endorses the spending framework ahead of its presentation to a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives.
“The Federal Executive Council has approved the 2026 Budget, and it is now ready for presentation to the National Assembly,” Olusegun says.
Vice President Kashim Shettima addresses ministers at the opening of the session, explaining that the emergency meeting is necessary to meet constitutional requirements and legislative timelines.
Earlier on Friday, President Tinubu formally notified parliamentary leadership of his intention to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill at a joint session scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The budget presentation marks a key step in Nigeria’s annual fiscal process, setting the framework for government spending, revenue projections and economic priorities for the coming year.
While full budget details are expected to emerge during the presentation, analysts anticipate continued focus on infrastructure development, economic growth, security and social welfare, in line with the administration’s reform agenda.
Following the presentation, the National Assembly is expected to commence budget scrutiny, committee reviews and stakeholder engagements before passage.
