ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved projects worth more than N1.02 trillion covering major road infrastructure, public-private partnership concessions and health sector investments, including a new National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment Centre in Abuja.
Briefing journalists after Wednesday’s FEC meeting, Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, said the council approved seven memoranda from the Ministry of Works, including six road projects and one proposal for trailer park concessions.
Among the approvals is the reconstruction of the Ado-Ekiti-Iyin-Aramoko-Itawure-Osun State boundary road valued at N159.83 billion, while the rehabilitation of the Abeokuta-Iboro-Ilaro Road in Ogun State received a variation approval worth N54.12 billion.
Council also approved the N74.51 billion upgrade of the 15-kilometre Phase II section of the East-West Road linking Port Harcourt to Onne Port Junction in Rivers State.
Goronyo said the project would significantly improve traffic flow and freight movement along one of Nigeria’s busiest economic corridors.
Additional approvals include the rehabilitation of the Ado-Ekiti-Afe Babalola University Road and construction of the Ilara-Iselu Road in Ogun State.
FEC also endorsed three privately financed highway concession projects under the Design, Finance, Build, Operate and Transfer model, covering trailer parks and highway operations without direct federal funding.
In the health sector, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, announced approvals for extensive upgrades at the National Hospital Abuja, including new clinical facilities, administrative infrastructure and a dedicated Neuroscience Institute.
Pate said the council also approved the construction of a National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment Centre valued at N302.30 billion to strengthen specialised cancer care and research.
