ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory Police Command reiterates that bail remains free, warning officers and the public that demanding money for a suspect’s release is illegal and punishable.
The command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday said any personnel found soliciting or accepting bail fees will face disciplinary action.
“Bail is free. Any demand for payment is fraudulent and should be reported immediately,” Adeh says.
She links the persistence of illegal charges to poor public awareness of citizens’ rights, adding that the command is already investigating an officer caught receiving a digital transfer for bail.
Adeh urges residents to document and report such incidents to ensure accountability and internal prosecution.
Victims and witnesses of bail-related extortion are advised to contact the FCT Police Complaint Response Unit on 08107314192, providing evidence such as transaction records or messages.
The police say the reminder forms part of ongoing efforts to restore public trust and enforce professional conduct across commands in Abuja.
