ENUGU, Nigeria – Police in Enugu State have arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly disguised himself in a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform after carrying out an armed robbery in the 9th Mile area of Udi Local Government.
The suspect, identified as Chinecherem Ugwuagu, was intercepted by the Safer Highway Patrol along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway on 11 October while riding a stolen Carter motorcycle.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe,in a statement on Monday, officers grew suspicious when Ugwuagu appeared nervous during a routine stop.
A search led to the recovery of a makeshift weapon disguised as a firearm using a lotion container, an ATM card, clothes, and other stolen belongings.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had earlier broken into a residence, using the fake gun to threaten his victim before fleeing with valuables. He later changed into the NYSC uniform to evade police detection.
“The suspect dressed in the uniform to avoid being caught but was arrested by eagle-eyed operatives,” Ndukwe said.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the patrol officers for their vigilance and professionalism, assuring residents of the command’s continued commitment to safety.
