GUSAU, Nigeria – Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has launched a €5.1 million European Union–funded project aimed at strengthening peace, stability and community resilience in conflict-affected areas of the state.
The project, known as the Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR) initiative, was unveiled on Monday at the Rescue Hall, Government House, Gusau, during a visit by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Gautier Mignot.
According to the statement on Tuesday, the 18-month project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in partnership with Mercy Corps and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).
Idris said the initiative builds on earlier EU-supported peace and reconciliation programmes and is expected to directly benefit more than 95,000 people, including internally displaced persons, returnees, host communities, women and youths across 10 local government areas—eight in Katsina State and two in Zamfara.
Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal said the project goes beyond policy frameworks, noting that it directly addresses the everyday realities of communities affected by insecurity.
“This project speaks to our shared commitment to building a more stable, united and resilient society. It aligns with our determination to confront insecurity by addressing its root causes, including exclusion, economic vulnerability, weak institutions and the breakdown of community trust,” he said.
The governor noted that the intervention complements his administration’s efforts to strengthen local peace structures, revive livelihoods for women and youths, enhance inter-agency coordination and promote community dialogue.
“Security, development and good governance are interconnected, and they must advance together if we are to achieve lasting peace,” Lawal added.
Earlier, EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot commended the Zamfara State Government for its cooperation with development partners and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting peace and stability initiatives in the region.
