ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Egba Economic Summit Group is urging Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dr David Umahi, to immediately fast-track the completion of the long-stalled Abeokuta–Ajebo Road, warning that prolonged delays now threaten safety, commerce and regional growth in Ogun State.
In a letter dated 16 January 2026, the non-partisan group says the federal road — stretching from Idi-Aba in Abeokuta through Obafemi and Ajebo to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — remains dangerously incomplete years after its award under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
“The abandoned sections and open excavations have turned this strategic corridor into a safety hazard,” the group’s president, Dr Gbenga Adeoye, writes. “Delays now pose economic and security risks to commuters and host communities.”
The group acknowledges the Federal Government’s renewed infrastructure push under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, citing flagship projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Badagry–Sokoto Road. However, it insists that the Abeokuta–Ajebo axis deserves similar urgency.
Adeoye commends Umahi’s directive for night repairs on the Sango–Abeokuta Road but stresses that piecemeal interventions are insufficient for a route with national economic value.
The summit group highlights the road’s potential to decongest the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, unlock industrial growth corridors, and support the proposed permanent site of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Ajebo.
“Completing this road to standard will directly stimulate investment, ease logistics and improve lives across Egbaland,” the letter states.
The group urges the Ministry of Works to enforce construction standards and timelines, warning that further delays will undermine Ogun State’s economic competitiveness and public confidence in federal infrastructure delivery.
