EBONYI, Nigeria – Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Ebonyi State arrest six suspects linked to the murder of traditional ruler Josephat Ikegwu.
Police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, says the arrests follow sustained intelligence-led investigations into the killing of the monarch in Onicha Local Government Area.
According to the Command, operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition during the operation.
Ukandu says the suspects will be arraigned in court after investigations conclude.
Reacting to the arrests, Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, vows that all those involved in violent crimes in the state will face justice.
“No individual involved in criminality will be allowed to evade justice,” Okafor states.
He assures residents that the Command remains committed to eliminating violent crimes and restoring public confidence in security operations across the state.
Ikegwu, the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo Community, was reportedly shot dead by gunmen at his residence on April 1 after attackers allegedly fired through his bedroom window while he rested with his wife.
Chairman of Onicha Local Governmnt Area, Ikechukwu Ogbuofia, earlier confirmed the killing.
The murder comes weeks after another Ebonyi monarch, Francis Igwe, is abducted and killed in March, intensifying concerns over rising insecurity in the state.
