WARRI, Nigeria – Police in Delta State have arrested a key suspect in the killing of retired High Court judge, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, intensifying investigations into the brutal murder that shocked the state capital, Asaba.
The State Criminal Investigation Department arrests the suspect, identified as Godwin Mngumi, 25, a security guard attached to the victim’s residence, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.
Edafe says operatives apprehend Mngumi on December 6 in Anambra State following actionable intelligence. The mobile phone belonging to the deceased judge is recovered from him. “He confessed to inviting two accomplices to the house where the crime was carried out,” Edafe states.
Police also arrest one Nnaji Obalum, while a third suspect remains on the run. Police Arrest Security Guard in Retired Judge’s Murder.
Justice Okogwu, an Asaba-born former judicial officer, was found dead on November 23 at her residence behind The Pointer Newspapers premises. Investigators say her hands and legs were bound, and the house was ransacked, indicating a violent and targeted attack.
Suspicion deepens after the night guard on duty disappears shortly after the incident.
Her brother, Ogbueshi Okogwu, raises concerns over internal compromise. “My eldest sister was murdered in her house. The disappearance of the night guard is a major red flag,” he says, questioning the conduct of the morning guard who allegedly found the gate open.
The family provides police with details of the private security firm responsible for the guards. Authorities detain the morning guard and invite the security company’s owner for questioning.
Police assure the public that investigations continue and that all suspects will be brought to justice.
