CROSS RIVER, Nigeria – The Cross River State House of Assembly suspends Obubra I lawmaker Dickson Agbor indefinitely over allegations of domestic assault, escalating concerns about misconduct among elected officials.
The decision is taken during plenary on Thursday following a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.
Lawmakers argue that the alleged behaviour undermines the ethical standards expected of public office holders.
“We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people,” Etta tells the House.
Following deliberations, the Assembly votes to place Agbor on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities pending investigation.
The House also establishes an ad hoc committee tasked with investigating the allegations and submitting findings for further legislative action.
Shortly after the resolution, Agbor is escorted out of the legislative chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms, in compliance with the Assembly’s directive.
Speaker of the House Elvert Ayambem emphasises that the legislature must uphold discipline and accountability.
“The House will not condone any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute,” Ayambem says.
“Members must conduct themselves in a way that reflects the trust reposed in them by the people.”
Officials say the suspension will remain in force until the investigative committee completes its findings.
Political observers say the case highlights increasing pressure on public institutions in Nigeria to enforce ethical conduct among elected representatives.
