LAGOS, Nigeria – The Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoD) calls for deeper collaboration with the Lagos State Government to strengthen leadership capacity and corporate governance within the public sector.
The institute’s President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Adetunji Oyebanji, made the appeal Wednesday during a courtesy visit by the organisation’s leadership to the state government.
Oyebanji says the visit formally introduces the institute’s new leadership and aims to expand cooperation with Lagos in promoting ethical leadership and professional standards in public institutions.
“Our visit is aimed at strengthening collaboration with Lagos State in promoting ethical leadership and professional integrity within public institutions,” Oyebanji says.
The institute’s leadership, which assumes office on June 27, 2025, operates under the IMPACT framework — Integrity, Meritocracy, Professionalism, Accountability, Customer-centricity and Teamwork.
Oyebanji praises Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for supporting the institute’s initiatives, including approving membership for permanent secretaries, directors and senior civil servants in the state public service.
The institute proposes a strategic partnership with Lagos focused on expanding membership and delivering executive governance training for senior public officials.
According to Oyebanji, the initiative will include specialised masterclasses, leadership programmes and board-effectiveness training designed to strengthen accountability and institutional performance.
He also briefs the state government on progress regarding the proposed CIoD House, a planned centre for corporate governance and leadership development.
Although construction has not yet begun due to economic challenges, Oyebanji says planning continues to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stresses the importance of strong governance in sustaining development.
“Lagos thrives when governance is strong and accountability is taken seriously,” the governor says.
The state is also expected to host the 2026 Annual Directors’ Conference, with Sanwo-Olu invited to serve as chief host.
