China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Mao Ning, addresses reporters in Beijing.
ABUJA,Nigeria – China has openly backed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and condemned remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened possible military action in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
The strong diplomatic position was issued on Tuesday by Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing in Beijing.
Mao described China and Nigeria as “comprehensive strategic partners,” stressing that Beijing opposes any form of external interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another country’s internal affairs or threaten it with sanctions or force,” she said.
She emphasised that Nigeria has the right to pursue a development path that reflects its own national realities.
“We support the Tinubu administration as it guides the Nigerian people along a development path that aligns with the country’s unique national conditions,” Mao stated.
She added that China values its decades-long cooperation with Africa’s largest economy and will continue to deepen ties based on mutual respect, non-interference, and shared growth goals.
The statement marks one of the strongest diplomatic rebuttals yet against the recent US-linked rhetoric suggesting forceful involvement in Nigeria’s internal governance and religious affairs.
