MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Kautikari community in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing one resident and burning parts of a secondary school in the latest assault on vulnerable communities in Nigeria’s North-East.
The attack occurred on Saturday evening at Government Day Secondary School in Kautikari village, where insurgents reportedly set fire to a block containing five classrooms and a staff office.
Residents say the attackers stormed the community at about 6:45 p.m., forcing many villagers to flee for safety.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, Chibok Local Government Education Secretary Malah Kyari says the affected facility is Kautikari Junior Secondary School.
“I confirm that the insurgents attacked Kautikari community yesterday, killed one person and set ablaze one block containing five classrooms and an office at Kautikari Junior Secondary School,” Kyari said.
The Borno State Police Command also confirmed the attack, saying security personnel responded swiftly to repel the assailants.
Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso says joint security forces prevented further destruction.
“They attacked Kautikari village, where they burnt classrooms at the Government Day Secondary School and killed one person,” Daso said.
“The suspected insurgents faced heavy resistance from joint security forces, averting further losses. The area is currently calm and intensive patrols are ongoing.”
Local sources tell reporters that the attackers arrived in large numbers on motorcycles and appeared to deliberately target the school.
“They entered Kautikari on motorcycles. Many residents ran away for safety. Their main target appeared to be the school, which they set on fire. During the attack, one man was killed,” a resident says.
Zonal Inspector for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Samaila Manza, says authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
The latest Boko Haram attack has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of schools and rural communities despite ongoing military operations against insurgents in the North-East.
Security forces remain deployed in the area to prevent further attacks and reassure residents.
