YENAGOA, Nigeria – Electricity supply in Bayelsa State receives a boost as Oando Plc begins gas delivery to a 60MW independent power plant, aimed at improving energy reliability for homes and businesses.
The NEPL/Oando joint venture supplies about 11.2 million standard cubic feet of gas daily through its Elebele Valve Station, ensuring steady operations at the plant.
President Bola Tinubu describes the project as vital to national growth.
“Reliable power is key to industrialisation… and economic growth,” he says.
Governor Douye Diri links the project to ongoing power sector reforms, noting it will stimulate economic activities and reduce dependence on costly self-generation.
The plant is expected to serve thousands of households and enterprises, offering a decentralised alternative to Nigeria’s fragile national grid.
Designed as an integrated system, the facility combines gas supply, embedded generation and local distribution to minimise transmission losses and improve voltage stability.
The development comes amid persistent outages tied to infrastructure vandalism along key transmission corridors.
Officials say the project strengthens Nigeria’s gas-to-power strategy while expanding private sector participation in electricity generation.
