AWKA, Nigeria – The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing free maternal healthcare services for pregnant women, urging expectant mothers to take advantage of the programme by registering early and attending antenatal clinics.
The assurance was given by the Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Dr Chizoba Prisca Ezeasor, during an inspection tour of Primary Healthcare Centres in Enugu-Agidi, Njikoka Local Government Area.
According to a government bulletin released on Wednesday, the free maternal healthcare programme covers antenatal care, safe delivery services, referrals and medically indicated surgeries at public health facilities across the state.
Ezeasor encouraged pregnant women to attend routine antenatal appointments and seek medical attention promptly whenever complications arise.
She said early access to skilled healthcare during pregnancy remains one of the most effective ways of reducing maternal and infant deaths.
The executive secretary reaffirmed Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare by eliminating financial barriers that prevent women from accessing essential medical services.
Some beneficiaries commended the programme, saying it had eased the financial burden associated with pregnancy and childbirth.
Mrs. Chioma Umeadi described the initiative as a major relief for expectant mothers, while Mrs Blessing Oraebunam said the free services had enabled more women to access quality healthcare without worrying about the cost.
The state government said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to improve access to essential healthcare services, promote skilled birth attendance and encourage more women to deliver in health facilities.
Officials also expressed optimism that the programme would contribute to reducing maternal and newborn deaths while improving overall health outcomes across Anambra State.
