ABUJA, Nigeria – Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, officially assumes office as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pledging to restore integrity, transparency, and unity within Nigeria’s electoral system.
At the handover ceremony in Abuja on Friday, Amupitan took over from Acting Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.
“The eyes of the nation are upon us,” he said. “We must prove that INEC stands for free, fair, and credible elections.”
Amupitan vowed to foster teamwork and open communication, adding that his leadership would prioritise staff welfare and institutional collaboration. “We will expect excellence from everyone while ensuring fairness and support for all,” he noted.
He identified the forthcoming Anambra governorship election as a crucial test of INEC’s credibility, promising to safeguard the will of the electorate.
“This is a moment to rebuild public trust and strengthen democracy,” Amupitan concluded.
With his assumption of duty, INEC begins a new chapter focused on transparency, staff motivation, and credible polls nationwide.
