ABUJA, Nigeria – The African Development Bank Group has approved a $6 million grant to support the African Risk Capacity (ARC) in enhancing disaster preparedness and risk financing across the continent.
The funding, announced on Wednesday in a statement, will be implemented under the African Disaster Risk Financing Initiative (ADRiFi) between 2025 and 2026.
The grant aims to help African governments transition from reactive disaster response to proactive emergency planning.
It will strengthen national institutions in areas including evidence-based risk assessment, policy training, and early warning systems.
According to the Bank, the support will also enhance financial planning for emergencies by helping countries develop frameworks for rapid response and resource allocation.
ARC will work to expand participation in its sovereign insurance risk pool while advancing advocacy for ratification of the ARC Treaty.
Member states most vulnerable to droughts, floods, cyclones, and disease outbreaks will receive priority technical support.
Policymakers, civil servants and technical experts will benefit from targeted capacity-building focused on risk quantification, contingency planning and programme monitoring.
