Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami while briefing newsmen in Yola
ADAMAWA, Nigeria – The Adamawa State Government has confirmed eight deaths following a suspected outbreak of Buruli ulcer in Malabu community, Fufore Local Government Area.
State Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami, disclosed the development to journalists in Yola on Tuesday.
He said several victims are receiving treatment at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, while samples have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory for confirmation.
Tangwami explained that Malabu community has been placed under close monitoring to prevent spread to neighbouring villages.
He added that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other partners, has deployed rapid response teams to contain the situation.
“Our medical team is working around the clock to stabilise the victims’ condition,” Tangwami said. He noted that containment measures include community awareness campaigns, provision of medical supplies, and enhanced surveillance.
The Commissioner appealed to residents to remain calm, practise good hygiene, and report any suspected cases to health facilities rather than resorting to traditional remedies, which could worsen infections.
Health experts warn that Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, progresses rapidly if untreated. Early treatment with antibiotics is effective, but delayed diagnosis may result in permanent disability or disfigurement.
Adamawa health officials confirmed that emergency measures remain in place as investigations continue.
