ABUJA, Nigeria – Abuja CNG supply is set to return to normal after scheduled maintenance at a gas supply facility in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, temporarily disrupted compressed natural gas distribution across Nigeria’s capital, leaving motorists stranded and triggering long queues at filling stations.
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) confirmed that the disruption resulted from maintenance work at the Ajaokuta gas facility, assuring motorists that repairs have been completed and supplies will resume shortly.
Speaking in an exclusive telephone interview with Africa Health Report on Wednesday, PCNGI representative Adetunji Prosper said the interruption was temporary and had already been resolved.
“It was a maintenance issue in Ajaokuta, and it has been attended to. It has been fixed, and there will be gas soon,” Prosper said.
The temporary disruption affected several compressed natural gas filling stations across the Federal Capital Territory, forcing many outlets to suspend sales after exhausting available stock. The shortage left motorists waiting for hours at the few stations that remained operational.
Earlier findings by Africa Health Report revealed that the supply disruption originated from the Ajaokuta axis, where maintenance work interrupted gas deliveries to Abuja.
A credible industry source, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly, said the maintenance significantly reduced gas availability across the city.
“The maintenance affected gas supply to several CNG stations in Abuja. The stations that remained open had to bring in gas from more distant locations, which reduced the volume they could dispense and led to the long queues motorists experienced,” the source said.
According to the source, operators that continued dispensing CNG were compelled to transport gas from more distant facilities, increasing logistics costs and reducing the volume available for consumers.
