UMUAHIA, Nigeria – The Abia State Disability Commission has distributed free sunscreen lotion to at least 100 persons with albinism, as part of a public health initiative aimed at reducing skin cancer risks among vulnerable groups.
The distribution held on Friday in Umuahia drew beneficiaries from across the 17 Local Government Areas.
Speaking at the event, the Commission Chairman, David Anyaele, said the initiative aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to improving the welfare and health outcomes of persons with disabilities.
He explained that the hot, dry season poses heightened risks for persons with albinism, whose skin is more susceptible to damage and cancer without adequate protection.
“We are entering a period when their skin becomes extremely dry and, in many cases, begins to bleed,” Anyaele said. “Appropriate sunscreen lotion is essential. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure.”
He noted that while 100 persons were reached in the first phase, the programme will continue to ensure wider coverage.
The Chairman of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, Abia Chapter, Enyinnaya Nwosu, commended the intervention, describing it as the first of its kind in the state. He revealed that over 1,000 persons with albinism reside in Abia.
Nwosu said the association is intensifying public education through radio programmes and community sensitisation, especially targeting local traditional institutions.
